WE HELP REFUGEES RESETTLE BACK INTO SOCIETY

REFUGEE MYTHS

Fact: They are not fugitives or outlaws. They are people who had to leave their home country for being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, political opinion, sex orientation, nationality or membership of a particular social group.

Fact: They are not criminals. One of the requirements for a person to be eligible for a refugee status is to not have committed  any crimes in their home country or anywhere else.

Law 9.474/97 is crystal clear when stating that refugee protection will not be considered to anybody that “has committed crimes against peace, war crimes, against humanity, hideous crimes, took part in terrorist activities or drug dealing”

Once in Brazil, they are subject to the same criminal laws as any Brazilian citizen.

Fact: They are not economic migrans. While migrants are people who make a conscious choice to move to another country, normally to seek a better economic situation (although several people migrate due to extreme needs and violation of basic Human Rights), refugees are forced to migrate and leave their homes, friends and family to escape from persecution.

Fact: They are not living illegally in Brazil. All refugee applicants and refugees are allowed to be in Brazil and are covered by a specific law, Law 9.474/97.
